Who’s Katie?

Human cephalopod.

The Professional

Katie McCleary, MFA, founded 916 Ink, a nonprofit that transforms children and youth into confident writers and published authors, who have been featured in more than 100 professional anthologies. She has raised more than 1.8 million dollars for arts and education programming for low-income and at-risk populations. In 2015, Mashable.com named Katie one of 15 "Real Miss America's" in the nation for her work with vulnerable populations. In 2017, she won the Heart of a Hero award from PBS: KVIE’s Rob on the Road Heroes & Helping Hands show. In 2018, she launched The Drive podcast, a collaboration between the American Leadership Forum and Capital Public Radio (Sacramento's NPR affiliate). She serves on the school board of Visions in Education, is a Senior Fellow with the American Leadership Forum, and is a national facilitator in the Amherst and Writers' Artist Method.

The writer

Katie has a unique MFA in creative writing AND consciousness. She believes that writing is a path toward deep awareness of who we are, where we’ve been, and what we can become. Her creative work has appeared nationally and locally, in Hip Mama, Vox, Susurrus, The Tule Review, Sacramento Magazine, and Sacramento News and Review. She has taught English and writing at American River college, Sacramento City College, UC Davis, and in various online universities. In 2018, she and Jan Haag launched River Rock Books, a publishing company dedicated to bringing Sacramentan literary writers to market. Their first book won Northern California Publishers and Writers’ Association’s “Best Memoir from a Small Press.” She is a trained national facilitator in the Amherst Writers and Artists Method, and uses this method to help 40 incarcerated men share stories and heal in old Folsom prison. Currently, she is at work on an experimental memoir about her body and is shopping a book about leadership for millenials.

“Katie’s teaching is inspiring and infectious. She teaches from the point of view of her own good grounding in writing and reading and brings a lot of creativity to how she approaches each class.”— Kathy Les, Journalist and Slow Food Movement Guru
